No. 1 Miami plays at No. 4 Notre Dame tonight without star receiver Malachi Toney

7.5 pointsNotre Dame's betting spread after news of Toney's surgery

Notre Dame opened as a 6.5-point favorite before the line moved.

If you're watching tonight, here's the setup: No. 1 Miami (8-0) plays at No. 4 Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. on NBC. Star receiver Malachi Toney will be out after he hurt his ankle in practice Wednesday and had surgery midweek. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said Miami still has "a lot of great players on their team."

The betting line moved with the news. Notre Dame opened as a 6.5-point favorite and went to 7.5 after word of the surgery. Cooper Barkate, the Duke transfer, is expected to see more targets, and running back Mark Fletcher Jr. should carry more of the load.

  • Where: Notre Dame Stadium, South Bend, Indiana
  • First ranked opponent: Notre Dame is Miami's first this season
  • Toney's return: hoped for later this season

Miami and Notre Dame renew Catholics vs. Convicts with playoff stakes tonight

If you know the name , tonight is the 29th chapter. It took off after Notre Dame beat Miami 31-30 in 1988 and went on to a national title. Last year, Miami's 27-24 win helped it leapfrog Notre Dame for the final playoff spot.

Miami and Notre Dame have traded big moments since 1988

  2. 2017Miami beats Notre Dame 41-8

The Miami Hurricane lays out the stakes: a Miami win would make it a playoff shoo-in, while Notre Dame, No. 11 in the first rankings on Nov. 3, would have little room to climb with a second loss. Canes fan Stewart Gold has his own scouting report on South Bend: "It's cold here, there's no sun, there's no beaches."

  • Miami's closing ACC games: Duke, Virginia Tech and Boston College
  • Notre Dame's lone loss: 28-24 to BYU, now No. 9
  • Toney this season: 73 catches, 1,027 yards, 13 touchdowns
  • ESPN College GameDay: students camped by the Touchdown Jesus mural
