If you've got a kindergartner or first-grader, a new choice is coming. Success Academy, a New York charter operator, will open inside five Miami-Dade high schools under a state policy called co-location, which lets charters use space at underenrolled public schools. At Westland Hialeah Senior High, the school opens in August with 12 classrooms, its own entrance and different lunch times from the high schoolers.

Success pays the district $700 per student to cover maintenance and other costs. United Teachers of Dade president Antonio White says that's nowhere near the cost of running a school.
